Survival mode: ON
A recently published study shed light on how Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome may be an evolutionary adaptation (hint: ADVANTAGE) to modern lifestyle and environment.
Conveniently enabled by the images in the study, I will loosely use this PCOS and Tyrannosaurus rex analogy. As it turns out, T-rexs aren’t as psychopathic as they were made out to be (sorry to the Triceratops & its fans). They did what they had to do to conserve energy. We are seeing an increasing number of people diagnosed with PCOS. Naturally, it wouldn’t be the first time scientists probe into its origins and acknowledge the possibility of the development of PCOS being a mismatch between ancient genetic survival mechanisms and modern lifestyle practices and environmental exposures.
I am grateful for this study because the researchers have acknowledged the COMPLEXITY of PCOS.Â
Your body is smart and likely misunderstood
The authors and researches of the study have accounted for research findings and evidence related to:
- evolutionary theory;
- genetics;
- in utero developmental epigenetic programming;
- transgenerational inheritance;
- metabolic features including insulin resistance, obesity and the apparent paradox of lean phenotypes;
- reproductive effects and subfertility;
- the impact of the microbiome and dysbiosis;
- endocrine-disrupting chemical exposure;
- and the influence of lifestyle factors such as poor-quality diet and physical inactivity.
What does this mean for you?
Your body is REALLY SMART for handling all the complexities of life and environmental changes while keeping you alive! Be easy on yourself.
- It certainly means that diet, lifestyle, stress management, environmental-focused interventions CAN be helpful in managing PCOS.Â
